CAPE MIAMI

Students Scylla Blervacq, Jaime Schmidt, and Alyssa Musarra from the Fall 2020 semester of Xavier Cortada’s socially engaged art course at the University of Miami created a platform to inform students about the dangers and possible consequences of COVID-19 through the use of socially engaged art. Their aim was to reframe students’ minds on the possibilities of social gathering by encouraging safe, fun alternatives. They also strived to highlight the work and efforts of the University of Miami Coral Gables campus’ Public Health Ambassadors led by the Butler Center for Service and Leadership, whose essential work often goes unnoticed or unappreciated during the pandemic.

The students hosted three major events throughout the course of the semester including Maskerade, a performative and participatory art piece, Canes’ Cope with COVID, a ZOOM workshop on mental health during the pandemic and meditation techniques, and the CAPE Concert, an end of semester virtual concert featuring student talent.

In addition to these three programs, the students shared COVID resources through the use of digital media via Instagram and their website (bit.ly/capemiami) and encouraged their peers to share their experiences during the pandemic through Miami Corona Project’s Share Your Voice platform.
