University of Miami 2021 Excellence in Civic Engagement Faculty Award

April 13, 2021

It is with great pleasure that we announce this year’s recipient of the Excellence in Civic Engagement Award, Xavier Cortada.  Xavier Cortada is Professor of Practice at the University of Miami Department of Art and Art History.  Cortada’s work is intended to generate awareness and action towards issues of global climate change.  Using the power and elasticity of participatory art to engage, Cortada and his students educate and inspire community members to work together and learn together to learn together to address issues in our community.  Through Plan(T), one of his many engaged art projects, Cortada and his students helped the Miami-Dade Community plan and plant for a future impacted by sea-level rise and saltwater intrusion.

Cortada’s Socially Engaged Art course (ART 315) incorporates his participatory environmental art projects to teach students aspects of  social practice.  The course enables students to understand how art can stretch across disciplines to engage community members in addressing social and environmental concerns.  More recently, Cortada led a workshop, The Art of Empathy (in a Global Climate Crisis), hosted by the Universidad San Francisco de Quito in Ecuador, in which students engaged in a dialogue about climate change that aims to provide a translational understanding of climate change and its global impact.  Dr. Gabriela Gerón, Director of Partnerships, Innovation, and Communications at the University of Miami Hemispheric & Global Affairs said, “With his work, he is advancing the University of Miami’s strategic goal to become the hemispheric university with collaborations needed to tackle society’s most complex problems impacting global communities.”

The Excellence in Civic Engagement Award recognizes faculty members who engage University of Miami students with the community through academic service-learning courses and community-based research. Congratulations Professor Cortada!

Each year, the University of Miami Office of Civic and Community Engagement recognizes winners at the Annual Celebration of Involvement. Like last year (due to COVID-19 precautions), all winners from the Celebration of Involvement will be recognized through a day-long virtual celebration shown via all Butler Center social media outlets. Additionally, the Office of Civic and Community Engagement will share an announcement to our community through email and a social media highlight.
