ROCK Stars

Xavier Cortada, ROCK Stars, 48″ x 108″, mixed media on canvas, 2001.

Children with cancer and their brothers and sisters became “ROCK Stars” on September 28-30, 2001, during the American Cancer Society, Florida Division’s Families ROCK (Reaching out to Cancer Kids) Weekend, a time for learning, sharing and fun. As the children and caregivers gathered to create the “ROCK Stars” collaborative mural, they wrote or drew messages of hope, love, support and survivorship.

The completed inspirational mural represents the positive side of the human spirit and its ability to triumph over adversity. Participants bonded with the others, taking comfort in the knowledge they are not alone in their battle with cancer.

This mural was created with the participants of the Florida Chapter of the American Cancer Society’s Families ROCK (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) Weekend in Orlando, Florida on September 28-30, 2001.
