Our Community Mural

Xavier Cortada, “Our Community Mural”, 48″ x 108″, mixed media on canvas, 2000.

The Human Services Coalition Annual Meeting Collaborative Mural Project

On June 12th, 2000 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m., Xavier Cortada facilitated the creation of a community mural at the Caleb Center in Liberty City (Miami, FL) as part of the Human Services Coalition (HSC) annual meeting. Over 400 participants representing a myriad of human services organizations contributed their messages and drawings onsite, and Cortada helped collage them to the canvas panels.

The Miami artist painted a community bridge (like the one conceptualized in the Building Bridges: A Community Mosaic draft proposal) as the central image on the mural. In essence, this can serve as a preliminary maquette for the actual bridge. Also, HSC printed posters of the completed mural.
