Preparing your Marker

Thank you for participating in the Underwater HOA project. By participating, you’re helping create awareness about the impact of sea level rise. This is how to participate:

Step 1: Visit Eyes on the Rise toolbox: www.eyesontherise.org/app. Using the toolbox, insert your home address and write down the number you find for your propert elevation.

Step 2: Instead of throwing out your political yard sign, reuse it. Paint it white (the color of the Antarctic glaciers).

Step 3: Paint your elevation number on the right side of the sign and a squiggly line beneath it in blue to represent the rising seas.  (The number on your Marker depicts how many feet of melting glacier water needs to rise before your property is under water.)

(You could skip step 2 and 3 and instead come pick up your Underwater Marker on December 2, 2018 from 10a to 5pm at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 S. Red Road, Pinecrest, FL)

Step 4: Place the sign in your front yard (keep it on your lawn through December 9, 2018) and take a photo of it.

Step 5: Visit the @UnderwaterHOA page on Facebook and “Like” the page.

Step 6: Post your photo, and a comment if desired, using the hashtag #UnderwaterHOA

Step 7:  Tell your neighbor to do the same.  Learn together, work together to address Sea Level Rise.

Get involved with us and join the Underwater Homeowners Association

Beginning December 2, 2018, and during Art Basel Miami Beach (December 6-9), Miami-Dade households are encouraged to join a newly-formed “Underwater Homeowners Association” and place in their front yards “Markers” artistically designed by acclaimed environmental artist Xavier Cortada. The markers depict the property’s elevation – how many feet of melting glacial water needs to rise before the property is underwater. The artist will also collaborate with high school students to map the elevation of four intersections, along Killian Drive in Pinecrest, by painting markers on the roadways.  (More below)

Launch

Underwater HOA volunteers are hard at work in creating the organizational framework for the Underwater HOA.  They will launch the initiative on November 8, 2018, during the opening of Xavier Cortada’s “Antarctic Ice Paintings: Global Coastlines & Underwater HOA” exhibition (premiering works he created during 2007 in Antarctica) at the Hibiscus Gallery in Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Road.

Mapping

On December 2, 2018, from 10:00 am to 5:00 p.m., Underwater HOA volunteers will be at Pinecrest Gardens distributing markers to residents of Miami Dade County.  Residents will show their ID and will be informed of their property’s elevation. Residents will be given a corresponding marker (depicting the land elevation of their property) and will be asked to place it in their front yard through December 9, 2018.

Organizing

During December 2018, Miami-Dade residents will be encouraged to meet informally block by block and begin exploring issues they want to consider in addressing sea level rise.  They will do this as they prepare and self-organize for the inaugural meeting of the Underwater HOA on January 9th.

Inaugural Meeting/Official Meeting Notice

The inaugural meeting for the Underwater HOA is scheduled for January 9, 2019,7:00 p.m., at Xavier Cortada’s studio in Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 Red Road.  The organization will elect officers and ratify the by-laws. One vote per household. Only individuals bringing picture IDs and proof of elevation will be allowed to vote.

Underwater HOA is a participatory public art project Xavier Cortada is implementing in tandem with his “Antarctic Ice Paintings: Global Coastlines and Underwater HOA” exhibition in Pinecrest Gardens Hibiscus Gallery from November 8, 2018 through January 13, 2018.
