11:00:00    webstudio    "On the drive here I was listening to John Lennon's 'Starting Over', and thought about how many rock stars have sang about love... from Arethra to the painful Michael Bolton."

11:00:18    schmoop1    Is that a bad thing?

11:01:07    webstudio    Schmoop1, what do you think?

11:01:48    schmoop1    You ask what love is, but you seem interested in romantic love....

11:01:56    webstudio    Everyone please feel free to join in this little discussion.

11:02:10    schmoop1    I think it's an interactive process.... like this is...

11:02:38    webstudio    "Perhaps I've jumped the gun on that one", Xavier admits. "There are other kinds of love."

11:03:18    mel-and-jacob    for me, my child is love. he has taken over my soul. my every thought, hope, wish and dream revolves around him. he is the best thing that my husband and I have done together.

11:03:30    JOIN    Scott-Smith has joined. (192.147.65.114)

11:04:17    webstudio    Xavier asks mel-and-jacob, "How do we begin to capture those thoughts on canvas?"

11:04:35    webstudio    Welcome to Xavier's WebStudio, Scott

11:05:11    webstudio    Xavier wonders, "Should I paint a child; should I paint a couple; or should I paint Arethra Franklin?"

11:05:59    schmoop1    I'm most interested in the kind of love that is most volitional.......

11:06:32    schmoop1    the kind that involves the active conspiracy of two

11:06:53    webstudio    Xavier would like you to elaborate, Schmoop.

11:08:06    schmoop1    When lust cools, when it is by choice, will, and desire that 2 people keep the thing going

11:09:03    IDLE    Gigi-Laudisio was idle over 15 minutes and has been removed.

11:09:28    schmoop1    Love as shared secret, complicitous action, planned perpetration

11:10:48    schmoop1    i that ain't the only kind of love

11:11:06    schmoop1    i know that ain't the only kind of love there is...

11:11:42    webstudio    Scott, Xavier would like to know -- what is love?

11:13:08    webstudio    Schmoop: how should Xavier visualize what you're saying. What colors? What shapes? What anything?

11:13:11    mel-and-jacob    what is true love? does that mean that you can only love one person in that way in a lifetime? I have felt different kinds of love over time. at 18 I felt overwhelming love for a boy. that was true love for me then, but I can't remember his last name now.

11:14:46    webstudio    Mel: Xavier has written your text on the canvas, the text about your child. What colors should he use to portray that?

11:16:46    webstudio    (The fellow you see on your screen now is Pablo, Xavier's little brother. Is he a great webcam holder, or what?)

11:18:59    webstudio    Xavier is using paint to sketch random images. He's asking you to please help him edit them as he procedes. This is an experimental process; the most important thing is your input.

11:19:20    webstudio    "At the risk of being cliche: There are no wrong answers."

11:21:39    webstudio    Webmaster: if anyone is having any technical difficulties, or has any questions, please let me know.

11:22:05    IDLE    Scott-Smith was idle over 15 minutes and has been removed.

11:26:38    schmoop1    Love is a thing with feathers... emily dicksinson

11:27:20    JOIN    Jules has joined. (165.87.14.10)

11:27:40    webstudio    Xavier: "Any ideas on how to proceed? I'm painting a child in the middle -- kind of reminds me of that Stevie Wonder song: Isn't She Lovely? ("A child made from love").

11:28:00    IDLE    mel-and-jacob was idle over 15 minutes and has been removed.

11:28:19    webstudio    Hi Jules, Welcome to Xavier's WebStudio

11:29:27    webstudio    You've inspired Xavier to paint feathers, shmoop. Any particular kind of bird species?

11:30:25    schmoop1    i don't know

11:30:34    Jules    Hi, X! Can't hang out for too long, but I want to give my offering to your inspired project: "Love is God...God is Love" See how the canvas dances with this one. Love Jules

11:30:40    schmoop1    some birds are monogamous for a lifetime

11:30:57    schmoop1    penguins, auks, lovebirds

11:33:23    webstudio    Xavier thanks you for sharing two great, but intangible concepts, Jules. He asks, "How do I begin to paint God? How do I begin to paint Love?"

11:33:28    mel-and-jacob    with my husband now I would say that love is not just something that we feel, but something that we do. It's an endless task of making each other be the best that we can be. It's never ending.

11:34:22    schmoop1    that's beautiful and true for me & my partner as well

11:36:19    webstudio    "I am portraying that endless of 'doing love' as an infinity loop. How else would I begin to express this continuous process?"

11:37:30    webstudio    Xavier would like ideas for colors for the feathers. Schmoop?

11:38:19    Jules    THINK OF PEACOCK FEATHERS

11:38:41    webstudio    "Please, at your convenience, click on the discussion forum link and add your learned comments on love. I will then download, print, and collage them to this painting."

11:39:47    schmoop1    iridescent greens, pale blues, pearly whites

11:40:20    webstudio    Jules: schmoop was alluding to penguins, auks, and lovebirds as monogomous birds; they can wear Dickinson's badge of "Love is a Feather".

11:40:50    schmoop1    love is a thing with feathers

11:41:17    webstudio    Thanks schmoop. Jules, should we also use the peacock colors?

11:42:21    webstudio    What kind of a "thing" in feathers? Discuss among yourselves.

11:43:03    JOIN    Willie has joined. (205.183.210.66)

11:43:59    schmoop1    Jules, you there?

11:44:03    webstudio    Hi Willie, Xavier welcomes you to his WebStudio.

11:44:12    webstudio    Where you from?

11:44:44    schmoop1    Xavier, I gotta go know. I'll check in later. Bye all...

11:45:06    schmoop1    I'm off for my spelling lesson.

11:45:18    webstudio    "Thank you schmoop for your wisdom, and your love."

11:45:19    LEAVE    schmoop1 has left.

11:45:42    Jules    Peacock feathers are regal and holy - they allude to the purest form of love, which may at times feel inaccessible but otherwise always a possibility. And What a possibility! To love like God loves... think and feel it and that is how you can paint God as Love. I leave you with that. Love Jules

11:47:37    Willie    My opinion is, Love is the great intangible that separates humans from beings we consider less human. It is the distillation of all of the best mankind has within himself. It is a bright white light eminating from the soul that could almost be considered God-like.

11:51:28    Willie    After reading the other comments included here, about peacock feathers and their coloration, you could make a case for the brightness of the feathers representing love as well. After all, the feathers on the male bird are designed to attract the attention of predators, preserving the safety of the female, as well as the children. In an odd sense, this could be seen as God's love, a protection mechanism, if you will.

11:52:44    LEAVE    Jules has left.

11:54:12    Willie    One last thought, before I leave, X. Love is knowing that someone else would give all to protect another. Love is sacrifice when required, but the sacrifice is never felt by the gift giver. I admire your interest in quantifying such a subject, because love is all things we make it.

11:55:36    Willie    Love to you and JC, my artist-brother. Be well.

11:56:03    LEAVE    Willie has left.

12:11:30    JOIN    mel-and-jacob has joined. (205.188.199.43)

12:12:17    webstudio    Welcome back, Mel and Jacob. Thanks for returning.

12:12:33    webstudio    We're still working on the Love Painting.

12:13:43    webstudio    Your quote is the central image of this painting, because I think it captures the essence of that eternal and continuous commitment, process that two people share.

12:14:23    mel-and-jacob    we had to eat...babies are bottomless

12:14:29    webstudio    To the right of it I'm beginning to draw feathers, alluding to schmoop's earlier emily dickinson quote: Love is a thing with feathers.

12:14:53    mel-and-jacob    the painting is beautiful

12:15:27    webstudio    To the left, I'm trying to capture Jules' comments on "Love is God; God is Love".

12:15:44    webstudio    Thank you very much, Mel.

12:16:43    webstudio    The last thing I expected a painting on love to have is such cool colors. Traditionally love is portrayed as "steamy red hot". Seems as if all your comments have tempered my opinion.

12:17:21    webstudio    I came in here seeing red, and I'm painting cool blue.

12:22:12    mel-and-jacob    maybe the cool colors show the warmth and compassion of lasting love

12:24:02    webstudio    Indeed, I perceive this as a more serious and compelling painting. Red seems something more that happens in the back seat of a car.

12:24:25    webstudio    This painting has a spiritual approach, a family approach, a true love approach.

12:25:16    webstudio    These papers are a transcript of all our words we've used today in the WebStudio. I'm affixing them to the painting.

12:25:23    mel-and-jacob    what are you holding up?

12:28:26    mel-and-jacob    we've got to go. baby is teething. love the studio...we'll be back next time. bye X!

12:29:16    webstudio    Can't wait to hear from you again!

12:29:42    webstudio    It's incredible that it takes this project to have both of us collaborate on this piece: you in Iowa, me in Miami.

12:30:04    webstudio    Maybe it speaks of our new world order.

12:30:38    webstudio    Thanks for participating, see you next time,

12:30:39    LEAVE    mel-and-jacob has left.

12:33:47    JOIN    mel has joined. (205.188.199.43)

12:34:19    webstudio    You can't get enough of this, can you?

12:35:57    mel    one more question...will you be doing a new painting thursday or working on this one?

12:36:55    webstudio    Being that there are ten minutes left in this session, I'll pick up from where I left off.

12:37:04    mel    jacob fell asleep in my arms...so I have a free hand.

12:37:20    webstudio    I do expect to have completed this painting by the third session, and begin a new one next week,

12:37:45    webstudio    Naturally, we'll continue to explore the love topic. Who knows, that one may be red?

12:38:23    webstudio    I'm going to name this painting, "The Love Painting: About Jacob"

12:40:41    webstudio    Does Jacob snore?

12:42:41    webstudio    Mel, was the Willie who was here earlier your husband Willard?

12:43:03    mel    jacob does not snore...his father does though. we are very flattered about the name. thanks!

12:44:12    mel    yes is was ...he signed on from work

12:45:27    webstudio    That's great. Please if you could, scan a photo of the three of you and email it to webstudio@cortada.com -- I will incorporate it into the painting.

12:46:56    webstudio    Oh well Mel and Jacob, thank you for being the first and last ones to sign-up and participate in the inaugural session of the WebStudio.

12:47:50    webstudio    I'm going to close shop now, please come on Thursday.

12:48:48    webstudio    It's been a pleasure to create art collaboratively across state lines. Love, Xavier.

12:50:49    LEAVE    webstudio has left.

love2-98.jpg (5440 bytes) WebStudio Log:  The Love Painting

During the month of April, WebStudio participants focus on the topic of love and create "The Love Painting" through a collaborative process that builds upon the work from the preceeding WebStudio sessions.

Participants interested in viewing what others have contributed can see the chatroom and image logs documenting the process.  Naturally, more participant input is available at the Participant's Gallery and in the Discussion Forum on Love.

Logs are organized by session dates, click here to return to the main directory of the log of previous sessions.
