[14:56] WebStudio joined #WebStudio. [14:56] #WebStudio: mode change '+nt ' by WebStudio!cortada@zuni.tignet.com [14:58] Xavier (webstudio@ABD00BE5.ipt.aol.com) joined #WebStudio. [14:59] Spamlite (webstudio@98A60FC2.ipt.aol.com) joined #WebStudio. [14:59] <Spamlite> Hello [14:59] <Xavier> Hi Spamlite [14:59] <Xavier> Welcome to the WebStudio [14:59] <Spamlite> thanks [14:59] <Spamlite> i hope you've had a nice day [14:59] <Xavier> Are you familiar with the WebStudio concept? [14:59] <Spamlite> are you starting a new painting today? [15:00] <Spamlite> yes i am [15:00] <Xavier> I've been painting all morning at a local high school with some students, and ready to receive input in the creation of the Love Painting (the one you see infront of you) [15:00] <Spamlite> it's sort of scary [15:00] <Spamlite> what's love got to do with it? [15:01] <Xavier> I'm starting to receive input towards the creation of another painting ... it's a process that involves a lot of back and forth until we come up with an idea. If you have something in mind, I can start a new one right away. Otherwise we can try talking a little first. What is your pleasure? [15:02] <Spamlite> Unrecquited love [15:02] <Xavier> It actually is very scary. It has to do with the things that lead to love falling apart: miscommunication and misunderstanding. [15:02] <Spamlite> love from afar, love not responded to [15:02] <Xavier> You can refer back to the logs of a week and a half ago to see how this bizarre painting came about. [15:02] <Spamlite> ok [15:03] <Spamlite> how about chaste chivalric love' [15:03] <Spamlite> love mong saints [15:03] <Spamlite> among saints [15:03] <Spamlite> betwixt knight and lady [15:03] <Xavier> Interestingly enough, the folks who have come into the WebStudio and given me feedback on love, have not focused on the kind of Shakespearean poetry-evoking love that I contemplated exploring when I set out to create the love painting. [15:04] <Spamlite> there's literature.... and there is life [15:04] <Xavier> elaborate on that "chaste chivalric" love [15:05] <Spamlite> in the middle ages a knight would fight for "his"lady, for her honor, [15:05] <Xavier> sure, and in a sense, that's what i think makes these paintings so exciting. [15:05] <Spamlite> not just her carnal body [15:05] <Spamlite> she usually was wed to some geezrt [15:05] <Xavier> if you were to ask me to talk about love right now, the very first thing that would come to mind right now, is Littleton Colorado [15:06] <Spamlite> not me [15:06] <Xavier> ... and the outpouring of love in that direction [15:06] <Spamlite> for me the essence of Littleton is the failure of love [15:06] <Xavier> an entire community embracing one another in such a tragedy [15:07] <Spamlite> true, but did any of thejocks ever embrace the freaks? [15:07] <Xavier> yes, littleton yesturday was about that -- our inability to show compassion/love, especially to people who are different that we are. [15:07] <Spamlite> or did they taunt them for being different [15:07] <Xavier> But that was yesturday. [15:07] <Spamlite> and today? Kosovo [15:07] <Spamlite> or Rwanda [15:08] <Spamlite> is the opposite of love, hate? [15:08] <Xavier> my sense (i'm not there) is that Littleton today is about a completely different emotion (than the absence of love) [15:08] <Spamlite> it is love catching up, it is love arriving when it is too late [15:08] <Xavier> You pose a very interesting question, and one that I am seriously trying to explore [15:09] <Xavier> Is the opposite of love hate? [15:09] <Spamlite> or is it indifference? [15:09] <Xavier> I believe that hate cannot happen in the presence of love; they are mutualy exclusive. [15:09] <Spamlite> or are we screwed up by thinking in dichotonies, in twos, in opposites? [15:09] <Xavier> However, there are many couple who swore to love one another in front of an altar, and no longer do. [15:09] <Xavier> In fact, they swear at each other in their lawyers' offices [15:10] <Spamlite> i disagree..... people often define what they love by what they hate [15:10] <Xavier> Again, a valuable perspective [15:10] <Xavier> Give me an example [15:10] <Xavier> (Just so we can home in on the concept) [15:11] <Spamlite> do you know that serbs, albanians, turks, bosnians, and bulgarians share a love for yogurt, circle dances and little lamb croquettes called chevapchichi? [15:11] <Spamlite> it's the uncola concept [15:11] <Spamlite> it's a negative definition [15:11] <Xavier> Define love in that context [15:12] <Xavier> Is it the kind of thing Shakespeare wrote about? Is it real life (using his definition)? [15:12] <Spamlite> My love of the Orthodox Christian Serbian Heartland of Kosovo is so strong [15:12] <Xavier> Is it the kind of thing that Tina Turner and the Beatles yern for? [15:12] <Spamlite> that I cannot stand to see enemy aliens who desecrate the place from living there [15:13] <Xavier> Yes, but you were talking about yogurt and dancing... are those indicators of a culture or the culture itself? [15:13] <Spamlite> Love as absence of hate, love as desire to possess what we cannot have [15:13] <Xavier> Is it like loving a perfume because it reminds you of someone you haven't seen in a long time? [15:13] <Spamlite> both [15:14] <Spamlite> how about painting about love as longing for the unattainable [15:15] <Xavier> I want to help capture what you're saying, like so many things there is difficulty in putting our arms around it [15:15] <Spamlite> i'm gonna sit back and watch [15:15] <Spamlite> just pick one [15:15] <Spamlite> love is so many things to so many people [15:15] <Spamlite> love of flag and country [15:15] <Spamlite> love of god [15:15] <Spamlite> love of sensation [15:15] <Xavier> Currently, as you can see on your screen, I'm just adding little details to an already completed painting. Let's focus on the task on using imagery to define another concept. Let's develop the theme of our next painting on love [15:16] <Spamlite> can yopu love too much? [15:16] <Spamlite> can you be a love aadict ? [15:16] <Spamlite> how about remembered love [15:16] <Spamlite> firsat love [15:16] <Spamlite> how about soraya perez in 5th grade [15:18] <Xavier> Who is Soraya Perez? [15:18] <Xavier> I'll leave that as an unanswered. [15:18] <Xavier> Do enjoy the creation of this painting; hopefully it can lead to further contemplation, for both of us.

WebStudio Log: The Love Painting During the month of April, WebStudio participants focus on the topic of love and create "The Love Painting" through a collaborative process that builds upon the work from the preceeding WebStudio sessions. Participants interested in viewing what others have contributed can see the chatroom and image logs documenting the process. Naturally, more participant input is available at the Participant's Gallery and in the Discussion Forum on Love. Logs are organized by session dates, click here to return to the main directory of the log of previous sessions. back to the WebStudio main page |
