17:56:03 JOIN GODIVA has joined. (205.188.200.34)

17:56:04 webstudio Welcome to the WebStudio, Troy.

17:56:25 webstudio Hi Godiva.

17:56:53 GODIVA hI wEBSTUDIO

17:57:19 webstudio "Here we go .... I'm currently working on the second painting in the Love Painting series.  We started it on Saturday and it focuses on communication and understanding."

17:57:56 webstudio "Are you familiar with what we're doing here at the WebStudio, Troy?"

17:58:46 JOIN Barcanon has joined. (12.8.182.62)

17:59:14 webstudio Greetings, Barcanon.

17:59:18 Barcanon ;)

18:00:41 Barcanon Just to inform you - the page before this says the Webstudio is currently 'closed'

18:00:43 Troy-Rodriguez hello

18:01:13 webstudio "In this process I look to the WebStudio participants present in the chat room to guide me in the composition and color of the paintings."

18:01:54 webstudio Thanks, Barcanon.

18:04:48 webstudio "In this image you see a couple struggling towards resolution.   The character on the left is remorseful, apologetic; the one on the right is distraught over his actions."

18:05:51 webstudio "Participants on Saturday's session focused on how miscommunication can have unintended consequences.  What ideas do today's participants (you) have on this point?"

18:06:38 webstudio "Incidentally, for those of you who are interested in reading the transcripts of Saturday's sessions, please scroll to the bottom of the chat and click on the log link."

18:07:32 webstudio "Also participants are encouraged to contribute by posting comments on the discussion forum (see link below) and by emailing us scanned images to be posted in the participant's gallery."

18:08:40 webstudio "Troy, how did you find out about the WebStudio?"

18:13:27 Barcanon It seems to me that all of communication rests on intention - all of lanugage is - in a sense - miscomunication.  All our words represent ideas and all our ideas are our own.  To me the figure on the left looks more determened then   remorseful.  Maybe there is a way to express the idea of people talking past or around each other in the painting.

18:14:48 webstudio "As if their intentions were being misinterpreted?"

18:15:39 Barcanon As if there communication was being misinterpreted.

18:17:40 webstudio "We can get quite literal here.  We can draw mouths and arrows to ears, arrows to brains.  We could write words backwords.  What ideas do you have?"

18:20:01 Barcanon Hehe, just start over and make their necks intertwined.  No, actually i like those ideas - maybe have them looking past each other ?

18:20:22 webstudio "The process of the WebStudio is for you to inspire me and for you to inspire me, in the creation of this collective process.  Hopefully, the comment that I made might have triggered an idea in your head; the comment you made may trigger an idea that consciously or not may find itself to this canvas."

18:21:10 webstudio "I'm drawing intertwining necks ... hehe."

18:22:05 webstudio "I know you were kidding, but the truth is we can't let the product get in the way of the process.  I'll meet you half way and we'll see how we can create this.  Give me ideas as you see me paint, if you would."

18:22:40 GODIVA tHIS IS A SLOW PROCESS

18:23:19 webstudio "What is a slow process, Godiva?"

18:25:22 JOIN Troy-Rodriguez has joined. (169.132.25.40)

18:25:33 webstudio "What do you think of the inter-twining necks so far?"

18:25:51 Barcanon I'd like to see  images behind the two characters that are similar yet different - reflective of there own personal concept.

18:26:57 Barcanon I like the necks tho.  I think the left character should have symbolic images behind him like the right character does.

18:27:17 webstudio "Troy let me give you an update.  We had a co=participant in the studio suggest that the parties' miscommunication be represented by inter-twining necks.  The idea being that sometimes we speak above/around/or beyond the other's ability or willingness to understand."

18:28:51 webstudio "The images behind the right character are a candle representing love flickering between a storm and the warmth reprsented by the heart -- images suggested by the Saturday group."

18:29:17 Troy-Rodriguez A=B C=B, therefore A can equal C

18:29:31 webstudio "What images would you recommend for the character on the left?"

18:30:37 webstudio "Troy, which emotions and/or characters would you represent by A, B, and C?"

18:30:55 Barcanon erm, a torch and an ice cream cone?

18:31:47 webstudio "Elaborate on those images, Barcanon."

18:32:13 webstudio "(I give you a little bit and you go crazy, eh Barcanon?)"

18:32:17 webstudio :)

18:33:16 Barcanon Well to me the left figure seems more resolute - so a torch would be analgous to the candle and the ice cream cone is cold but sweet and kinda looks like a heart.  Hey, you asked.

18:33:31 Barcanon ;)

18:33:50 webstudio "Any flavor of icecream?"

18:34:10 Barcanon Flavour is best left to the artist.

18:34:44 Troy-Rodriguez A=man C=woman, B=love

18:36:15 webstudio "Let's actually talk about the flavor.  Godiva chocolates and sweets make their way into Valentine's bags.  There's a certain peace offering that the character on the left seems to be making to the character on the right.   Wouldn't he be showing her the way (torch) towards a more compassionate/sweeter (icecream) side of their conversation/communication."

18:37:23 webstudio "Troy, flesh that out for me.  Would that mean that man equals woman?  In what way?  Their relationship?  Their love?"

18:37:24 Barcanon hehe, yes i do believe he would.

18:45:44 webstudio Sorry, we were having technical difficulties."

18:46:09 webstudio "Do remember that this is an experimental process/project.   We are eager to take risks and make mistakes."

18:46:29 Barcanon I like that ice cream cone

18:47:48 webstudio "It's Mantecado -- a Cuban icecream parlor specialty."

18:48:05 Barcanon :)

18:48:18 webstudio "Should've I used mamey or dulce de leche instead?"

18:49:32 Barcanon Neccesitas una perro andante?

18:49:59 webstudio "What about the torch?  Where should I put the torch?"

18:50:34 Barcanon Not too close to the ice cream.

18:51:02 webstudio "I know -- 'cause it'll melt."

18:51:12 webstudio "What feeling are you trying to evoke?"

18:51:24 Barcanon But close to it - somewhere between the arm and the neck, left of the ice cream

18:52:30 Barcanon i was trying to communicate a balance between the two characters by giving them an equal number of symbolic images

18:53:50 webstudio "For people who don't read this text in the logs, what do you think these images convey: torch, icecream, candle, heart?"

18:54:10 Barcanon yeah, thats PERfect

18:56:12 Barcanon i would think that it would have personal significance for each individual who sees it - just as similar concepts have different interpretations for people in love

18:57:28 webstudio "By the way, I thank you Barcanon for your courage in your approach to this painting.  Some of the participants are rather timid in communicating what they want to see happen to this painting, because they somehow see that their ideas may be an intrusion to my process.  But they shouldn't be so worried about protecting me -- I am the one who conceived this process, and the one who puts himself at the 'mercy' of the participants."

18:58:54 webstudio "If I were somehow scared of icecream cones or inter-twining necks, these webcams wouldn't be on.  The truth is that your contributions in the past 25 minutes have greatly enhanced this painting, and I am grateful."

18:59:05 Barcanon True, and we also put ourselfs at the mercy of your interpretation, but isn't that the point?

18:59:50 Barcanon Well, actually i'm finding it quite fun and interesting.

19:00:24 webstudio "It truly is.  Thank you for your wisdom and input, Barcanon.  We'll be back online Friday night at 11p.m. Eastern time."

19:00:47 webstudio "Time to sign off now; see you in a couple of days."

19:00:56 Barcanon goodevening

19:01:19 LEAVE webstudio has left.

During the month of April, WebStudio participants focus on the topic of love and create "The Love Painting" through a collaborative process that builds upon the work from the preceeding WebStudio sessions.

Participants interested in viewing what others have contributed can see the chatroom and image logs documenting the process.  Naturally, more participant input is available at the Participant's Gallery and in the Discussion Forum on Love.

Logs are organized by session dates, click here to return to the main directory of the log of previous sessions.
