12:51:48 webstudio Greetings Jean welcome to the WebStudio

12:55:02 webstudio please scroll to the bottom of this page and click on the previous sessions so you can see what three different groups of folks have done to create the piece that is currently on the screen

12:56:43 webstudio As you may gather, it is a collaborative piece that tries to capture "love" through the comments made on-line through this chatroom

12:57:43 webstudio Input can also be provided by posting an article in the discussion forum on love, or by e-mailing us directly

12:58:42 jean what is the topic today  ?

12:59:21 webstudio The links for the discussion forum and the webstudio e-mail can also be found by scrolling to the bottom of this chatroom

12:59:42 webstudio Today's topic is love.

13:00:16 webstudio "You can learn more about this topic by clicking on the 'love painting' link at the bottom of this page."

13:00:54 webstudio "Specifically, we're going to put some finishing touches on the painting before you, and begin gathering ideas for another painting we're going to start today."

13:01:21 webstudio "First of all, do you have any comments or ideas on this painting I'm working on right now?"

13:02:05 webstudio "It is a painting that tries to capture paternal love, divine love, and family love -- based on the input from the three prior sessions."

13:02:49 webstudio Welcome to the WebStudio, Miguel.

13:04:56 webstudio "So today we're looking for your input as to what the new painting should be, and hopefully we'll explore topics other than these three."

13:05:16 webstudio "However, that's entirely up to you."

13:09:33 jean I THINK LOVE IS SOMETHING WE LEARN TO DO.THE MORE ONE UNDERSTANDS ABOUT ANOTHER PERSON THE MORE ONE IS ABLE TO COMMUNICATE AND IF THE  RELATIONSHIP IS AN INTIMATE ONE SURELY THIS AIDES IN HAVING A MORE LOVING REALTIONSHIP. I THINK HATE IS LEARNED TOO.

13:11:06 webstudio "Jean, do you think hate and love are part of one emotion at different sides of a continuum?"

13:14:42 The-ASSMAN love is............................?

13:14:58 jean that's an interesting idea you suggest.my first reaction is to say no as one emotion does not necessarily include or exclude the other.not sure if i'm making sense

13:15:29 webstudio "Impossible?"

13:16:27 jean who is the -assman

13:17:26 webstudio "I certainly hope you're right, Jean.  How sad if something so beautiful is a mirror image of something so evil.  The only reason I raise it, is because more often than not you hate the ones you have loved.  Or so I think.  That is, it's difficult to hate someone you haven't had a strong connection with.  But that maybe the answer.  Maybe to hate someone, to really hate someone, means you never really loved that person."

13:17:33 webstudio "Am I making sense?"

13:18:32 webstudio "Greetings Chris, welcome to the WebStudio.  We are fleshing out ideas for a new painting that we'll start momentarily, as I put the finishing touches on this one, the one we've been working on for the past three sessions."

13:20:11 webstudio "Does anyone have any ideas about the topic for the second painting.  The first one explored family and divine concepts of love.   Anyone interested in another form of love?"

13:20:18 jean no doubt there are many contributing factors that  go into loving or hating. maybe that's smething to think about.one well known reason to hate seems to be differences

13:20:33 chris Truth

13:21:22 Miguel-Angel Hello, do you copy me??

13:21:39 webstudio "Or Jean, to bring it full circle to your first comment, our inability to communicate our differences, whether in a dysfunctional household, or in Kosovo."

13:22:02 webstudio Loud and clear, Miguel.

13:22:16 Miguel-Angel Ah, allright. I think that love is a feeling, something you don't really understand until you feel it. So, I would say that love is undestanding.

13:22:22 jean yes exactly

13:22:42 webstudio "True love, Chris?"

13:22:57 LEAVE chris has left.

13:23:48 Miguel-Angel How would you depict understanding on the canvas?

13:24:14 webstudio "Miguel talks about understanding, Jean talks about communication, Chris talks about truth -- shall we begin to tie these together?"

13:24:30 jean love is an evolving creative state i would think.if it can survive   this and grow i would say there was truth involved

13:24:33 webstudio "How would you, Miguel?"

13:24:48 Miguel-Angel Marvelous input about the differences.

13:25:08 webstudio "I think, Miguel, we've been begun our second painting with your question."

13:26:12 Miguel-Angel I find so difficult to depict understanding on a visual way. All my life I've been a realistic artist, depicting what I see. So much difficult is to depict what you don't see.

13:26:55 webstudio "I think this painting is about communication and understanding, and there are different ways of approaching it."

13:27:46 webstudio "For one, we can incorporate symbols or shortcuts."

13:28:05 webstudio "A visual iconography of sorts."

13:29:21 webstudio "Secondly, we can and will incorporate text.... this log session, and hopefully any articles you may post in the discussion forum."

13:29:36 jean symbols  that we may have to discover for ourselves.yes that's difficult.dreams and a constant watch on our inner life would seem to be a prerquisite.

13:30:01 webstudio "Thirdly, we can use certain colors to create emotions.   For instance, complementary colors merging."

13:30:10 webstudio "What ideas do you have?"

13:31:08 Miguel-Angel Hello, I'm back after I fell.

13:31:11 jean dancing in the flames

13:31:41 webstudio "Think of a point in your life where misunderstanding had an effect.  Try to think of the moment, put yourself in the place and time.   Now close your eyes, just for a second, and 'see' what you see -- what images come to mind?  I'll do the same."

13:32:34 Miguel-Angel Visual iconography, text. Excellent.

13:32:44 webstudio "Anyone open their eyes yet?"

13:33:03 webstudio Welcome back, Willy.

13:33:28 webstudio "Miguel, would you be so kind to lead us in a brain-storming rant that deals with visual iconography?"

13:33:51 webstudio "Please do not hesitate to throw in any person, place, or thing that comes to mind.  Any."

13:34:18 jean words are much easier to come up with.i'm thinking of a fluttering sick feeling.tears about to spring.now for an image.help

13:34:19 Miguel-Angel Wow!! you touche a point there!! A moment in my life where misunderstanding had an effect! There are many in our experiences.... any in particular?

13:34:43 willy I just got here.  What is the subtext of the discussion of visual iconography?

13:35:30 webstudio "Miguel: think of a misunderstanding in a love situation."

13:36:03 willy OK, I think I know where we are going now...

13:36:21 webstudio "The painting we worked on the past three sessions is all but finishedm, Willy.  I'll be painting it online while the chat room is closed, but we'll probably not be receiving any more input on it, so we can focus on this second painting."

13:36:48 webstudio "This second painting is talking about the understanding and communication in love, and we're looking at ways of portraying that."

13:37:39 Miguel-Angel Let's see. Iconography about misunderstanding. A child pointing with a finger to an image of a heart. He understands the iconography as love. People around him don't understand why he's pointing.

13:37:47 webstudio "What are some obvious icons to depict communication?"

13:38:27 jean flooding  a torrent gushing..a darkness is in the background and threatening to overtake.am i on or off the track

13:38:36 willy Focusing on a direct portrayal, you could have two people, looking at each other or juxtaposed similarly, with one person looking frustrated/betrayed while the other appears sorry.  This would be more of an apology after a misunderstanding, though.

13:38:57 webstudio "Does this capture it?  Tell me more."

13:39:38 willy A flickering candle, with the flame representing love under stress...

13:39:39 webstudio "The track is understanding, are you describing precursors to understanding, as in being misunderstood, Jean?"

13:40:13 Miguel-Angel Are you asking me?

13:40:41 webstudio "Indeed, Miguel.  And everyone else."

13:42:12 jean no i'm trying to describe the near intangible sensation when one realizes you've not understood correctly and have made  another person suffer.

13:42:18 Miguel-Angel Well, the image of a child I was suggesting is of a more universal love. The love that permeates and oozes out of every act of creation.

13:42:52 jean the flickering candle idea touches me

13:45:10 jean wow this is thrilling

13:45:35 webstudio "You're seeing me draw very rough sketches of the images you've suggested.  Naturally, these are my interpretations of your interpretations.   Please give me specific advice on how to make this more consistant with what you're imagining, on the other side of this cyber-communication."

13:45:47 webstudio "After all, this *is* about understanding."

13:46:05 Willy We need to tie the image of the hand (at 9 oclock) and the communication between the two people together.  What could be a bridge for the images?

13:46:53 jean i don't know how to get to the painting you are doing

13:47:27 webstudio "The hand was symbollicaly the boys hand as recommended by Miguel.... what ideas do we have?"

13:47:35 Willy The storm and the candle work very well together, especially if it is a light colored candle against a dark stormy background image.

love2-98.jpg (5440 bytes) WebStudio Log:  The Love Painting

During the month of April, WebStudio participants focus on the topic of love and create "The Love Painting" through a collaborative process that builds upon the work from the preceeding WebStudio sessions.

Participants interested in viewing what others have contributed can see the chatroom and image logs documenting the process.  Naturally, more participant input is available at the Participant's Gallery and in the Discussion Forum on Love.

Logs are organized by session dates, click here to return to the main directory of the log of previous sessions.
