A new exhibit mixes science and art

Coming soon to the Maryland Science Center—the National Science Foundations’s Antarctic Artists and Writers Program. The Exhibit of art, photography, writings and sculpture coincides with the 50th anniversary convening of the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting held in Baltimore in April 2009. Never before has an extensive collection of Artist and Writers Program works been on display.

Exhibit highlights

    * Stunning photography from Antarctica including wildlife and landscapes

    * Paintings and Sculpture that reflect the extreme conditions of life on the continent

    * New and unique perspectives on a largely unknown land mass

A unique collection from talented artists given access to a remote landscape

The exhibit features artwork, photography and sculpture from NSF’s Artists and Writers Program, which makes possible artists’ and writers’ travel to Antarctica to create writings and works of art to increase public understanding of the Antarctic region and the research performed there.

More than a cold icy wilderness

Audiences can see artists’ recreations of the continent as well as both artists’ and scientists’ accounts of living and working there. Understand why Antarctica is more than a cold icy wilderness and why the continent is both austere and beautiful with a variety of landforms and life forms Antarctica is more than just a setting for critical scientific research.
